Of Horses and Rats

Sasha
The dozen recruits from Magnimar effectively doubles Sandpoint's standing guard to 24, plus the 60 or so part time militia. After spending the afternoon working with them, Sasha realizes that they are not poorly trained, just untested. The new arrivals also have a typical big city attitude at being stationed out here, and Sasha overhears more than a few mutterings about backwater country rubes that can't look after themselves, and why are we taking drill instruction from a mop headed tomboy who can't even wield a proper broad sword anyway? The latter Sasha silences after sending a few of them tumbling into the dust. But it gets her thinking, that she really doesn't know the first thing about soldiering. She could handle herself in a fight and could find a dozen ways to take down her opponents fast and dirty, but this whole lining up and fighting in formation and taking orders was new to her. She continued her braggadocio for the green leafs, but also started to keep a closer ear on the lessons Sheriff Hemlock was teaching them as well.

Gerund
Shayliss takes the paladin's hand with a smile and hurriedly leads them through the streets. Soon they are at the store and Shayliss enters with Gerund in tow, leading him to the basement stairs. Shayliss grips the Gerund's arm as she peers down the stairs nervously from behind him.

Well, that’s the basement. I dropped my lantern down there when I saw the last giant rat. Come, I’ll open the door for you.”

“Wait here,” Gerund says, pushing Shayliss behind him as he draws his sword and cautiously descends the stairs. As he enters, he sees a soft glow coming from around a corner in the basement storeroom, giving off enough light to make his way around the room. The room itself is quite large, with many stacks of goods, from foodstuffs, to farm equipment, to general hardware goods stacked neatly on shelves and in barrels or pallets. The room is obviously used regularly as it is clean from any dust or cobwebs. In fact the room is altogether too clean for a storeroom that has been taken over by giant rats, of which there is no sign. As Gerund moves further into the room, he finds the lantern that Shayliss left behind. Instead of finding a carelessly discarded lantern, the paladin finds it is carefully arranged on a small table that is beside a small cot, that has been readied with linens.

When Gerund hears a sound from behind him, he turns to find Shayliss has entered the room behind him and has closed the door, locking it as she does so. Her innocent and nervous look has been replaced with one of mischief and seduction. Before Gerund can say anything, Shayliss deftly slips out of her bodice, and slides her arms around him, trying to guide him towards the cot. She murmurs to him, her voice almost a purr, “Oh, you are so brave to come to my aid. Why don't you let me show you how grateful I can be..."

Poot and Yola
The merchant's said they were ambushed several hours farther east of the Thistle river crossing on the Lost Coast road. The crossing is about a two hour walk from Sandpoint, so you figure that's as good place to start your search. When you arrive at the river, you take some time to rest and look for clues. Poot dangles his feet in the cool river, then scrambles back in surprise as a goblin corpse bobs by, an arrow protruding from its back. Moments later you hear a squeal and the crashing of brush. About sixty yards up river several goblins, usually very stealthy little gaffers break from the under brush like maddened game fowl and run straight along the bank towards Yola and Poot. Poot grabs for his bow and puts arrow to string as Yola unslings her exotic new blade from her back, but all three goblins fall in rapid succession, stuck through with arrows fired from the trees.

The two adventurers stand their ground, confused and on guard for another moment until a familiar female voice yells out from the trees, "Hail friends of Sandpoint!" The tall silhouette of Shalelu Andosana steps forth from the brush, curved longbow still in hand.

The human, the halfling and the elf make an impromptu camp and sit down to share their stories. After Poot has filled the ranger in on how he single-handedly ( "ow! no need hit a bloke in the back of the head like that Yola!") defeated the villain Tsuto and uncovered his alliance with the goblins, she tells her story:

"I started by scouting out the caves of the Birdcruncher goblins since they were mostly the ones who attacked the town at the festival, but their lairs were almost completely deserted. So I though I'd track down Bruthazmus, a vile bugbear that stalks this region that I have crossed blades with before. Bruthazmus' regular haunts were also deserted. I started asking around the farmers and woodsmen in the area, and it turns out that he hooked up with several other humanoids and moved into Thistletop a couple of weeks ago. It sounds to me like we have an alliance of some sort between the Thistletop goblins and this crew that Tsuto and Bruthazmus have fallen in with. So what say you? Shall we gather your comrades and see what's afoot in the goblin's lair, or would you rather keep chasing after a lost horse?"

Sasha spends the better part of the day running through drills with the green-leafs, fighting sparring with them in maneuvers and assisting Sheriff Hemlock whenever he calls.

"It's good your here," Hemlock says. "The recruits like having a hero around. It also makes my job easier. I don't have to intimidate them by myself."

Sasha nods trying to catch her breath. "Thanks, soldiering is new to me I'm not much on orders."

"You're doing fine," says Hemlock. "You still have a lot to learn but for now you're learning. That and I've noticed some the recruit of been taking a fancy to you."

Sasha smiles. "Well, I like knocking them into the mud too."

Hemlock lets out a short chuckle. "Aye, it's too bad we don't have that Paladin friend of yours here. The two of you could show these green-leafs how to might 'dirty' and 'clean'."

Sasha sheaths her rapier and brushes a strand of hair from her face.

"He's helping out Vinder clear out some rats from his store. He sent a note saying as much."

Hemlock laughs, "That's a good one!"

Sasha give him a quizzical look.

"The only rat in Vinder's store is Vinder. In the man is obsessive about keeping the place cleaner than a maiden on her wedding night. There's been no rats in that building since Vinder set up shop."

Stopping in mid-stride Sasha's eyes go wide and panic sweeps through her. After asking Hemlock for directions to the Store she sets off at a brisk run toward the center of town.

"Gerund," she swears to herself "what trouble are you in now?"

"Well I guess the responsible thing to do is to gather the others and hit this goblin lair."
Poot tried not to show his dissapointment that the Adventure of Shadowmist had ended so abruptly.
"Hell I don't even know how to ride a horse if I found one." Poot confessed stuffing a third travelling biscuit in his mouth.
"Well let's round up Seoni and Gerund and..and..Gerund, Gerund wait a minute what did he tell me...he was up to...something important about...slaying a damsel!?"
Poot hopped up and quickly broke camp rushing the other two back towards town.
"What is going on Master Poot?" Yola demanded to know.
"I think our Paladin has gone blood crazy! He told me he was off to slay a damsel! We've got to stop him before he whips out his sword!" OOC: sorry couldn't resist.

[DM? Have I taken any kind of special...vows?]

@ Gerund: lets see, protect the innocent, slay evil, defend law in the face of chaos... nope, nothing in there about shopkeeper's daughters.

Yola runs alongside with Poot, " Gerunds slaying a damsel" are you sure? Poot nods his head and keeps running,

Yola breaking into a long run, it would have been so much easier if we had caught the horse first - she mutters to herself.

Sasha runs to the general store drawing her Rapier once inside.

Her heart pounding in her chest Sasha secures the main floor finding nothing suspicious than over-priced flour.

After several minutes of thorough searching Sasha finds a staircase leading to the basement.

"This is no good," she thinks to herself. "Trouble always flows downhill" her mother used to say.

Inching toward the door she can her muffled voices on the other side. Cautiously she touches the latch and slowly tries to open with as much stealth as she can muster. The door is firmly locked.

Sasha takes a few steps back and biting her lower-lip ponders the best course of action.

[OOC: Well, then, I think Gerund would "press on" as it were, since that would be much more embarrassing and thus, funny, if he were in as compromising a position as possible.]

"So, you don't have a rat problem, then?" he asks, already suspecting the answer. Gerund hadn't had much experience with women before, but it seemed she was sending fairly clear signals to him about her intentions.

She shakes her head, "No."

"So you asked me down here to..."

"Yes."

City womenfolk are a lot different than country maidens. he thought.

My, these country boys are so slow sometimes. Do I have to spell it out for him?

"All right, then, help me off with my armour. It's new and the straps are kind of stiff."

"How about you?" she teases.

Gerund blushes, "Beg your pardon?"

The last of his armour and clothing on the floor, he returns her embrace, and they fall gently to the cot together.

[Cue helpful friends in 3...2...1...]

Just as things are starting to heat up between Shayliss and Gerund, there is a loud banging at the door to the cellar, followed by a deep voice that makes them both jump in surprise.

"Shay?! Shay! Are you there? What's going on, why have you locked the door? Are you ok in there? Shay!"

Shayliss jumps off of Gerund, her eyes wide with fright as she scrambles for her clothes. She looks at the now bare chested Gerund and hisses frantically.

"It's my father! Quick, do something!"

The knocking at the door stops and is replaced by the sound of keys being fitted into the lock on the otherside of the door. In a few moment the father will be in the room, and as things stand now, there is little doubt that he will figure out what Shayliss and Gerund were up to.

OOC: You have roughly 10 seconds before the father get's the door opened.

OOC: I'm carefully balancing the time line on this little sequence. Gerund really needs to make the next move. Other characters please feel free to chime on with OOC posts (hints, tips, words of encouragement), or posts like "if this happens, then my character does this" and I'll string the actions together for Sun.

My POA:

1. Get dressed. If I don't think there's enough time to put on my armour, I will, but otherwise, clothes first. (Discuss in whispers, "You noticed things were missing from the store room, got it?")

2. Find sword and shield.

3. Get into battle stance, face corne, with Shayliss behind me.

My Story And I'm Sticking To It:

My friends and I were investigating any and all possible entries to the tunnels beneath the city buildings where the goblins might return through. The shop basement is full of foodstuffs (and with Shayliss' corroboration that "some stuff had gone missing") I was checking for secret panels, doors and hidden access tunnels - possibly even magic ones, which the ordinary citizen might not notice, but a Paladin who can sense evil, would.

I had just heard a noise, and was getting ready to slay the goblin - or whatever - when her father banged on the door, thus explaining her dishevelled, breathless appearance.

(And I will have to do a follow-up investigation later to make it look convincing.)

Oh, and if I don't have time to put on my armour, I explain that the noise it made might alert whatever beastie was waiting, so I took it off to use the element of surprise.

[OOC: I can't believe it. The paladin's lying his face off!]

Sasha ponders the lock door a bit more and gives up.

"Gerund hunting rats? Oh, rats"

Sasha slaps her forehead. "Of course ... " she says. "Rats equals thieves. Vinden probably had a problem with some local thieves and needed Gerund to deal with them."

"Well it's obvious he's not here. Sasha heads up the stair case sees the store is unattended and grabs a loaf of day-old bread. Living a few copper pieces to pay for it she steps outside and takes a breath of fresh deciding if she should return to the Sheriff or not.

[OOC: I can't believe it I would actually believe him too]

[OOC: Well, he did go there in the first place thinking there'd been another goblin outbreak. Besides, he's protecting her reputation. Or trying to.]
