Prisoner Pits

Just before Yola starts down the stairs, Gerund pushes his way to the front of the group and puts a restraining hand on her shoulder. He closes his eyes and concentrates on the room below for several moments. When his eyes open, he speaks gravely to his companions. "I sense many evil auras in the room below. Its hard to tell without actually being able to see the room, but there are at least a dozen separate auras down there." His stern face then breaks into an ironic grin. "On the bright side, all of the auras are rather faint." With that he slaps Yola on the back and indicates for her to lead on.

Seoni comes up behind the paladin, clearly concerned, "Twelve of them? Really? Are you sure this is such a good idea?"

Gerund shrugs and replies, "They're evil. They need to be vanquished. Its what I do." He turns and follows Yola down the stairs. Seoni sighs and proceeds after him. Sasha and Poot glance at each other nervously then hurry to catch up to their companions.

The stairs lead down into a strangely cold chamber, with a ceiling that rises to a vaulted height of twenty feet. The floor contains eleven wooden lids strewn haphazardly over eleven five foot wide pits in the ground. From the darkness within these pits echo up strange shuffling sounds, and every so often, a low moan.

Your attention is torn away from these pits though as an angry goblin war cry echoes through the chamber. You look up to see a monstrous abomination zigzagging across the floor towards you. Though once a goblin perhaps, what charges at you now is a twisted insane mockery, with extra malformed limbs sprouted randomly from its body, and an extra eye blinking sightlessly from between rolls of fat on its belly. Its easily twice the size of a normal goblin, and the long sword, axe and dagger that it waves around wildly all look very sharp.

Initiative order has been posted. Gerund Seoni and Yola can act before the mutant goblin, Poot and Sasha after. Remember that you can move and attack diagonally. The first diagonal that you move costs 1 square of movement, the second costs 2. Please refer to the grid reference in your post to let me know where you want to end up.

Sasha has her rapier at the ready and will be ready to attack should the rest of the party fan out.

Seoni uses Touch of Destiny (attack bonus) on Gerund and then ducks out of the way to E1.

Gerund accepts his destiny, "Thank you, M'lady, now it would be best if you stood back," and moves astride Yola (C2), shield and sword ready. While his main goal is the Big Ugly, (which he will try and draw the attention of so his comrades can flank it), he will be keeping an eye on the pits below (being attached to his footwear, and thus, his limbs) and "Filthy abomination, you face Gerund of Windsong Abbey! I and my companions are the greatest goblin slayers to have ever lived, which is fortunate, as you are the most revolting goblin I have ever seen, whose carcass I wouldn't feed to the lowest flea-bitten mongrel in all of Varisia! Come and feel my steel, for it longs to part your spine!"

Seoni feels like applauding! Gerund's speech rocks! [In Champions' terms, that would totally be a presence attack.]

Seeing that the creature is about to get a fistfull of zeal from the Paladin, Poot will sneak his way along the southern wall of the room, heading to the passage opening. He wants to scout, making sure they aren't flanked by more creatures entering the room.

Great posts all! I have a couple of questions.

@Yola: Your pole arm is so long that you cannot attack creatures directly adjacent to you. You must be 1 square away. Where would you like to move instead? I'd recommend A3,4,5

@Gerund: Opposite issue here. You have to be adjacent to attack. Is C2 where you wanted to be?

@Sasha: Do you want to sneak north or sneak south.

Not that you asked for clarification but just in case:
Poot moves along southern wall to
E5 to check down passage with his bow at the ready.
